Jeffrey E. Dolan

Jeff Dolan is a Shareholder in the Braintree office of Boyle | Shaughnessy Law. Jeff’s practice concentrates in insurance coverage, bad-faith litigation, construction law, personal injury, and sexual assault claims.  

Jeff has appeared in numerous state and federal courts in Massachusetts, including the Massachusetts Court of Appeals. As part of his insurance coverage practice, Jeff has successfully litigated numerous declaratory judgment actions on behalf of both insurance companies and insureds. Jeff has also successfully defended clients in various litigation matters. 

Jeff has been published in numerous publications at the local and national levels. Jeff authored various articles pertaining to litigation arising out of claims of sexual assault on college campuses. A link to a full-length article on this topic can be found below. Jeff has been published on this topic in DRI’s national publication, The Whisper, and twice in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. Jeff has also presented on this topic for law enforcement and school officials as part of the Norfolk District Attorney’s training for investigation of sexual assaults and domestic violence in a school setting. 

Jeff is an active member of DRI’s Insurance Law and Young Lawyers Committees. As part of his involvement with DRI, Jeff frequently attends national conferences regarding insurance coverage and bad-faith litigation. Jeff has also blogged about developments in insurance coverage litigation for DRI and is in the process of co-authoring the Massachusetts chapter of DRI’s forthcoming Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Compendium with fellow Boyle | Shaughnessy Law Shareholder, Tanya Austin. 

Jeff graduated, magna cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School 2010. At Suffolk Law, Jeff was the Production Editor of the Suffolk University Law Review from 2009-2010. During his time in law school, Jeff was published three times in the Suffolk University Law Review and received multiple commendations for legal writing, including the Best Brief award for his Legal Practice Skills class and Best Case Comment for the Suffolk University Law Review’s Write-On Competition. 

During law school, Jeff also worked as a research assistant with two former justices of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court—Retired Chief Justice Herbert Wilkins and Retired Justice John Greaney—in preparation for a symposium on Massachusetts Constitutional Law. 

Jeff is a graduate of The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received his B.A. in Political Science. Jeff resides in Rockland, Massachusetts with his wife. 


- Obtained summary judgment establishing that insurer did not owe duty to indemnify where insured could not meet burden of establishing that damage was caused by an “occurrence.”  

- Obtained declaratory judgment establishing duty to defend under Owners and Contractors Policy in underlying case involving accidental death on premises of clients. 

- Obtained declaratory judgment establishing duty to defend developer with regard to claim for construction defects in condominium project. 

- Obtained summary judgment for retail store after successfully precluding plaintiff from introducing expert testimony to support claim of dangerous and defective condition on store’s premises. 

- Part of team that obtained summary judgment establishing that insurer did not owe duty to indemnify under personal and advertising injury coverage due to policy exclusion for acts committed with malice.
